Ena Joyce was born in Sydney in 1925 and started her artistic journey by studying at the East Sydney Technical College in the mid 1940s. She was awarded a prestigious Travelling Art scholarship in 1946 and decided to spend three years in the UK and Europe. During her time abroad, she studied at the London School of Arts & Crafts (1946 – 1949), which allowed her to develop her artistic skills further. After returning to Australia, she taught art at the secondary level until 1958, while also actively exhibiting her works in solo and group shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle. She took a further study tour to Europe in 1972-3 and 1980. She was recognized for her outstanding talent and won numerous prizes throughout her career, including the coveted 1977 Portia Geach Prize.
