John Rigby
John Thomas Rigby (1922 – 2012) was an Australian artist who was known for his tropical and bush landscapes, genre, and portraits. He began showing an interest in art while living adjacent to the Glass House Mountains and went on to enroll in art at the Brisbane Central Technical College. He served in the Australian Military Forces before commencing freelance commercial art and producing cartoon strips. He won the Italian Government Travelling Art Prize in 1955 and subsequently won many other prizes, including the Sulman Prize in 1962. Rigby was a Trustee of the Queensland Art Gallery and Officer-in-Charge of Fine Art at the Queensland College of Art. He received various honorary doctorates and was made an honorary member of the Royal Queensland Art Society. He was the subject of a comprehensive book and a special survey of his portraits at the Museum of Brisbane.
